To be involved in the community is important as both our Managers are alumni of West Ferris Secondary School. We continue to work and support within the sports department with Larry Tougas. From Football, Basketball, and Soccer and many tournament sponsorships we have seen many students return to the Moose for a night out upon graduation on weekends such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Breaks. Welcome home! (portal.nearnorthschools.ca/sites/schools/wferris/Pages/)

Minor hockey is where it all begins, with dreams of one day playing in the big league or simply out to have fun. For the love of the sport our kids are playing hockey and it gets us as hospitality managers out of the everyday hustle and bustle to the rink to spend time with our children as our parents did with us. As our kids grow up so do we but it’s the game we grow up with that make memories forever. (www.wfmha.ca)

The Bands
We love to play host to many musicians and their bands. Whether they have played here or not, at one time or another, we took care of them all for dinner. From HANSON, Poor Young Things, Marianas Trench, Simple Plan, McMaster & James, The Trews, and of course our very own local singer/songwriter Cody Allen, to name a few. Music is a way of life and it’s nice after a long bus ride from the previous town to arrive in North Bay for a nice Cookhouse meal.

Movember (and how it came to The Moose)
Way back in 2008, Micheal Chirico was in Australia for Teachers College and close to the end of his post-secondary career, he noticed that all the male teachers at his school were sporting some rather spectacular lip hair. At first he just assumed that it was an Aussie thing but after a couple of weeks, he had to ask “Mate’s; what’s up with your upper lip hair?” Much to his surprise, every year in Australia during the month of November the country came together for a fundraising effort to raise awareness about prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives which was started down under. Little did he know at the time this would be a life changing event.
Upon returning back to Canada in 2009, he didn’t think all that much about Movember for that year… the out of sight out of mind excuse became all too easy to ignore. Things changed suddenly in the spring of 2010 when his father, one of our regular patrons here at The Moose, was diagnosed with cancer. After a hard battle, his father beat cancer… and Movember was only a month away and Mike was thinking of what he could do to help out.
Movember was brought to us here at The Moose in October 2010 and has now become an annual tradition. In our first two years of running this promotion in which all our male staff members sport moustaches of all shapes, sizes and colours, and with the help of our amazing patrons, we have managed to raise approximately $6,000. That is a testament to just how much, not only our staff but, the public has bought into this global initiative. In 2011, 854,000 Mo’ Bros and Mo’ Sistas joined the fight raising close to $125.7 million Canadian worldwide.
It just goes to show just how quickly words from your lips (or just your upper lip) can help change the fight against cancer.
